Many thanks to Syd Bird for this great old photo of Carlton Terrace. A few readers have commented on a previous Friday Photo of the old Burnetts Garage and today’s photo follows on rather nicely.
Notice that the Cottage Hospital doesn’t yet exist on the opposite of the main road. That dates this photo prior to 1910. We’re not sure when this photo was taken but Syd informs me that he has an old Ordnance Survey map from 1871 and Carlton Terrace appears on that. There are no other houses along Birkenhead Road (same side) or Bertram Drive either.
Note that the photo over on the Burnetts Garage site shows a turret that doesn’t appear in the photo above. In the old garage photo post, Nick Dovey mentioned a sanitorium …I’m not clear on this so answers on a postcard please!
These are lovely old properties and if you’d like to buy the one on the left-hand side then you can have a closer look at the sale particulars.
A couple of these properties are currently dental surgeries of course. An old boss of a software company I worked at had an uncle who, I think, once had a surgery here and lived just over the road in Deneshey Road. His surname was Collins I think  – can anyone confirm this?
Spotted anything of note in this photo? Feel free to leave a comment!

Yes there definitely was a dentist called Collins in Carlton Terrace. I lived in area between 1949 and 1967 and I think he was still there in the late ’60s.
As you say lovely old properties….

Yes, i think the dentist before Geoff Brown was a Mr. Collins in the 60`s.
Lynda Williams nee Cooper says
When Geoff Brown went private he moved next door and there have been a few dentists since then in his old surgery, including Mr. Curran, Mr Kelsey and the latest one is Mr Patel, I have attended them all, including Mr. Collins before them.
Charles Morris says
The dentist Graham Collins had a surgery in Carlton Terrace from the early 1960s. He lived further along Birkenhead Road, on the same side, in a house called Pentland. Prior to moving his surgery to Carlton Terrace, he had his surgery in his mother’s house, also in Birkenhead Road but on the opposite side and nearer to Hoylake. He had two sons, Lee and Robert, who both went to Combermere School, and, I think, a daughter. He was active in the Hoylake Chess Club and he was also an amateur photographer. The Hoylake Photographic Society has some of his pictures. I obtained a copy of one of them which was (don’t laugh) of the old gas works ! It was in fact the only photo I have ever seen of it. It was one of those things which everyone wished was not there so never photographed it.
While I am about it, does anyone have any information on a Mr. Alfred Rowland, a shipowner who lived in a house called Rockland, on the corner of Birkenhead Road and Bertram drive, in the 1920s ?
John Logan says
As you have mentioned Combermere School do you, or does anyone reading this, know anything about the property in which it was run, The Grange. My Great Grandfather, Dr J.R.Logan lived there with his second wife, Constance Black until his death in 1944, and I believe she continued there for some years.
If any one has any photos of the building from the 1930s or 40s, I would be interested to see them. Perhaps a very elderly reader might remember them, or know of them from older relatives.
Any help given would be most welcome.
Thanks,
John Logan

I was interested to read your comments because I was at Combermere with Robert Collins. I wonder where he is now
John Logan says
I think this reply was meant to be a reply to Charles Morris, rather than me, as my comment related more to the building of The Grange, and his were about the school and people attending.
John Logan says
I think this reply was to Charles Morris, who was mentioning the school, while mine comment was also a reply to his, about The Grange itself as a building.

HI there
Graham Collins is my father in law – his youngest son is Stephen, and I met him when they were still living in Pentland.
I would love to obtain a copy of one of Graham’s photos if at all possible – I’ve tried the Hoylake photo society but no luck as yet.
thanks
Sue

Carlton Terrace. In 1950,s i was a member of the St Johns Ambulance Brigade. Our meeting hall was behind the garage and accessed by the lane behind the houses.
The leader was a Mr Quine? who lived in Manor Rd. In the building we had all the instruments to make a full marching band, but no tutor. Does anyone remember the band playing in public .
Ian P says
I remember Mr Quine, he was my neighbour in Manor Road and looked very smart in his uniform. He had a daughter Judy who took one of the lead parts in WK Grammar School’s mamouth production of Peer Gynt (200 girls in it – and I did the lighting!)
Judy was an excellent singer and I belive went on to a career in singing.

I wonder if any one has any information or pictures of George Rd, near Carr Lane. I lived at 14 and seem to remember that “welcome home Jack dad” was written in white paint near to the front door. If any one would like to share any stories or adventures of growing up in the 50’s and 60’s I would love to hear from them
