I think this a great image kindly sent in by Peter Burt. Great view of two yachts sailing off Hoylake (or maybe West Kirby?) with the Wales coastline in the background. Not a bad view is it, right on our doorstep.
Peter asks: “Does anyone remember our unusual sailing canoe between 1968 & 1980?”
And below is another view of Sandhey slipway from sometime in the 1970s. To span the decades I suppose we should have a photo of the jet ski chaps that used to meetup during the 90s.
These are two Hoylake Sailing Club boats and they would be taking part in a regatta at West Kirby Sailing Club. The one with the blue hull (no.8) is ‘Geisha’ and the red one (no.5) is ‘Country Girl’. They are Opera class boats and we owned one called ‘Gioconda’ (no.17) which was actually the last one to be built. All the local sailing clubs have their own class boat, H.S.C. adopted the Opera class in 1899 and all the boats were named after Operas. West Kirby have the Hilbre class and all the names of their boats began with ‘H’. We also part owned a Hilbre called “Hioco’
Great photos! The Sandhey one looks to be from the 80s judging by the vehicles (not quite enough resolution to be sure)….?
The lamp posts are perhaps the best clue.
It’s definitely not the 70s but when were those ‘new’ lamp posts installed? The 80s? Or the 90s?
Whenever it was their height makes them inappropriately intrusive.
My vehicle recognition ain’t what it used to be but the Range Rover is at least a late 80s model…
The photo of the Opera boats was taken at Meols.
