Hoylake received some snow today; just enough for some afternoon sledging in Queens Park as you can see from my photo above. Has west Wirral’s microclimate conquered again  …apart from the strong, cold wind that is and kept the snow at bay? See this BBC page and search for Wirral – the curator at Ness Gardens mentions the local climate.
A lot of Wirral schools either closed early or were closed for the whole day. The children (including mine) weren’t complaining of course but I’ve heard a few comments along the lines of schools and other services were closed too prematurely. Not an easy decision perhaps, especially in situations were child and public safety is paramount? Or is there an eagerness for people to down tools and have a rare snow day? As always, have your say in the comments below.
It would be interesting to compare notes with the big winter chill of ’62/63 (if my memory serves me correctly) I don’t remember any of the schools being closed then and we had to walk to school back then none of the current crop of 4×4’s. Is the U.K. now turning out molly coddled kids ? I’m not saying that we shouldn’t pay attention to our kids health & safety, but we as a race used to be a strong and hardy lot, but I’m a wee bit concerned with the way the pendulum is swinging these days.
It was cold doing two morning paper rounds a one evening one !!
In 1962 / 63 I mean .
I agree with you Stu, I notice lots of parents taking children in the car to do their paper rounds these days!!!
Yes, we have had much harder winters than this when we walked to school, played snowball fights in the playground and in the road outside and many other things we used to do in the 60’s but that was before this litigious society was in place and schools were terrified of getting sued if a pupil so much as hurt their leg or little finger in the playground. What on earth has happened to us??
I can go even further back, late’40’s early ’50s. No parents taking you and, I’m sure we fell over on the way. No one to take notes or statements to pass on to insurance people for claims, not sure of “litigation” was in the dictionary at that time!!
