Many thanks to Jane Williams for sending me this photo of Hoylake’s (only?) ghost sign. Back in May I suggested that an old, tiled shop doorstep was the nearest thing to a ghost sign that Hoylake could muster. A ghost sign is typically an old wall painted advert or shop sign and you can see more examples from around the country here.
When Jane mentioned the sign pictured above to me I vaguely remembered it being there. I seem to remember a chemists being at that shop (last used as a tattoo parlour) but was it once called the Central Pharmacy? You can’t see it today on the wall above the alley way to the Old Smithy Courtyard because there’s an advertising hoarding covering it, shown below.
There aren’t any other Hoylake or West Kirby ghost signs are there?
