REFURBISHMENT OF HOYLAKE COTTAGE DAY CENTRE BEGINS
Hoylake Cottage is about to undergo some changes. The two day care services provided, Sandhills and Cottages operate out of the original cottage hospital building – a building that is now over 100 years old. In order to continue to provide a first class service to the users of the centre, Hoylake Cottage is about to undertake a £540,000 refurbishment of the space. The funds needed to carry out this work have been raised over the last few years & the work has begun this week.
A large part of the refurbishment work will be the updating of gas, electricity and water supplies into the building. The fire alarm system will also be updated and an area at the back of the building will be demolished. Whilst the demolition work is being carried out, Cottages will be moved off site, to temporary accommodation at a local church. The remaining work will be carried out in phases working around the remaining client group.
One of the main changes will be the creation of a new open lounge with direct access via French windows to our sensory and celebration garden. The clients currently have access to the garden but the refurbishment will create a room with a view of the garden – vital with the British weather!
The current lounges will be refurbished and then redecorated providing different areas for daily activities to take place. This will allow groups of people to participate in a wider variety of activities. One of these lounges will continue to be a quieter place, as some clients like to read, build jigsaws or have some private time, whilst others are happy to take part in quizzes, sing-alongs and other activities.
Some of the initial stages of refurbishment have already been carried out with the creation of an assisted bathroom to provide a bathing service, not only for clients of the day care centre but also for others who need help to have a bath.
The funds are in place for the refurbishment work but Hoylake Cottage now needs support from the local community to furnish and equip the new rooms. This marks the launching of an appeal to raise £20,000 to buy vital equipment to ensure the day care services provided, continue to be first class.
