Revised plans to redevelop Hoylake tennis courts have been submitted to Wirral Council.
St Luke’s Methodist Church is seeking outline planning permission (documents) to build a mixed, 14-dwelling development of houses and apartments on the site of St Luke’s tennis club in Charles Road, Hoylake. The tennis courts (pictured) are located opposite the car park behind The Row, Market Street. The previous application, submitted in August last year was for a larger 17-dwelling development. The initial application was withdrawn last November.
The development will have to include some affordable housing and consists of the following:
- 4 three bedroom houses
- 2 one bedroom apartments
- 8 two bedroom apartments
A survey of local tennis facilities has been undertaken (detail) and concludes that “Hoylake is very well endowed with tennis facilities particularly in comparison with surrounding townships of Moreton, Heswall and West Kirby”. The survey reports that St Luke’s Tennis Club has 26 playing members and 10 non-playing members who play on the courts two mornings and one evening per week.
It has been previously suggested that as the tennis club was created as a war memorial, St Luke’s would “ensure that a suitable continuation of this memorial should be established in due course”.
What are your thoughts on this revised planning application?
Affordable housing is really great but it must always be in conjunction with services. The GP situation in the area is diabolical for instance
Seeing there are so few playing members, and they play only a couple of times a week, then only from Spring to Autumn months, and weather permitting, it seems ludicrous that the site should not be redeveloped as proposed especially including the social housing component.. This, in itself, would be a fitting war memorial As someone who played at St. Luke’s club, about 55 years ago, I can only highly recommend to planning authorities that the current application be approved.
Yes something else it looks like hoylake will lose. Not much left now, I don’t consider it needs even more housing.
I can remember, as a small boy, playing football on what was then a croquet lawn with Joe Mercer and his son David, when they lived in the house next door, 23 Grosvenor Road.
Hoylake does seem to have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to tennis courts and I think many of them are under used most of the time. On my visits there, I rarely see anyone playing tennis on the courts along the prom.
Mike it’s Ann green / Brady ring me I’m on the same number, would love to meet up or speak xxx
Tennis courts must be one of the few things Hoylake a few of then , make use it another way, that’s a long time ago when joe mercer was a lad amazing comparison
Joe Mercer wasn’t a lad, I was. Amazing misconception.
So a good time ago though?
Maybe so but still a long time ago so shouldn’t have any bearing on what happens now
My point being that this was not always a tennis court, and therefore had undergone a change of use previously. when it was under-used. Maybe it is time for another change of use, to suit the changing needs of the community.
Hoylake is short of open spaces and room to expand. It already has too much housing and parking will become a worse problem than it is now.
Please, anything but more housing on the tennis club site.
As a resident of Melrose Avenue I can only hope that the planning permission includes adequate parking for all these new houses and apartments. Looking at the size of the size of land the proposed development is supposed to fit on this does look very unlikely.
