Hoylake Community Cinema’s Fourth Season began with a sell-out screening of The Lunchbox, with everyone offered a complementary glass of bubbly on arrival. The Cinema is an offshoot of the local community group Hoylake Village Life and is the brainchild of Mark Howard, who is also responsible for the choice of films, and the screening on the night. It was set up in September 2010 with the screening of Nowhere Boy, the story of the early years of John Lennon. The cinema is run by volunteers from the community. Poster and ticket distribution are the responsibility of Ian Hazlehurst, who is also on the door with Sean Murphy; licensing and press releases are done by John Hall; the quizmaster is Julian Priest; the bar is run by Phil Smith, Jo Clarke, Sarah Briscoe, and Rosie Saville; and home-made food is provided by Gerry Martin.

Most people have their favourite Bond actor ‒ Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig; favourite movie – Dr No, From Russia With Love, Live and Let Die, The World Is Not Enough, Skyfall; and favourite title song, but few would disagree that Goldfinger is the quintessential Bond film. It is the third in the Bond franchise, after Dr No and From Russia With Love, but with a vastly increased budget. The first films were darker and followed more closely Ian Fleming’s novels. Goldfinger breaks free and introduces audiences to tongue-in-cheek humour and outrageous gadgetry. Who can forget the famous exchange between Bond and Goldfinger as the gold laser cuts between Bond’s legs. Bond says to Goldfinger: “Do you expect me to talk?”, to which Goldfinger replies: “No Mr Bond, I expect you to die.”

Bond’s mission takes him to Fort Knox, where Auric Goldfinger and his henchman are planning to raid Fort Knox and obliterate the world economy. To save the world once again, Bond will need to become friends with Goldfinger, dodge killer hats and avoid Goldfinger’s personal pilot, the sexy Pussy Galore. She might not have feelings for Bond, but will 007 help her change her mind?

Hoylake Community Cinema volunteer Jo Clarke said “I’m so excited at the prospect of seeing this Bond movie on the large screen. It’s one thing to see films on TV, but so much better sharing the experience with a large audience.”

The Parade Community Centre has full disabled access and is induction loop enabled for the hard of hearing.
