Having not had a copy for umpteen years, I asked for a Laver’s Tide Tables for my birthday this year. While browsing though it last weekend I noticed that today had one of the biggest high-tides of the whole year at 10.3 meters (33.6 feet) at around noon. High tide on Saturday afternoon is a smidges higher and then there’s a 34ft tide later in the year.
As you can see (above), the sea water was coming over the wall on to the promenade, though nothing like the storm surges of last winter in December and January! The view above is from the lifeboat station looking toward Meols with Liverpool in the distance. Don’t those street lamps stick out like a sore thumb? As a slight aside, the lamps in front of the bowling greens/tennis courts were switched off some time ago to save money, which makes walking along there at night considerably darker.
Here’s the view in the other direction:
A couple of hours earlier in the morning the Irish Sea hadn’t arrived:
There are still a few big tides to come over the next few days (subtract about 10mins for Hoylake times):
You can buy a copy of the tide tables from a local newsagent or from Hoylake Sailing School for less than £2.00. My daughters got mine from The Waverley in Banks Road, West Kirby.

Yes, the lamp posts are simply appalling! What was the Council thinking when it spent money on these? More suited to a dual carriageway trunk road than a quiet promenade. Something should be done…
