Philip Barton writes:

Attached is a wedding photo of Edith Barton and Thomas Murdock, taken in Hoylake in 1920. If any of your readers are able to identify any of the guests (especially the naval officer) I would be grateful if they could get in touch with me. Thank you.

Don’t they all look happy? Where was the picture taken?

Hi Phil looks like Ernest Edward Brumfitt with the white beard stood next to his wife Alice Barton with the large white hat, can’t be certain though

The man on the very left crouching down with his hand on his knee is my grand uncle Joseph Smith. The man with the white beard is Richard Barton, my great great granddad. The woman in the white hat is Elizabeth Ann Barton, my great grandmother. The man between them with the black tache is Herbert Smith, the man Elizabeth Ann married. Joseph Smith was their son, as was the young lad standing at the back on the right. He was also called Herbert Smith and was my granddad. He is the spit of my uncle Bob Smith who still lives in Hoylake. My gran Maud May Davies, who married that young lad at the back, used to have paintings of these people in her shed – she lived in one of the mock Tudor houses in Grange Road, West Kirby. Elizabeth Ann was a famous midwife in the area and also owned and ran the chip shop that is still serving people fish n chips in Grange Rd. I understand from previously contacting Phil (my distant cousin) that the chap with the black tache standing on the right, behind the two woman in white tops, is Elizabeth Ann’s brother William Henry Barton. I believe from Phil that the woman to his left (the one without the hat) is his wife Mary Maxwell. I’d assume that Richard Barton’s wife Elizabeth Jones might be somewhere amongst this lot but I don’t know which and can’t even be certain she was still alive. Phil and I are not sure where the photo was taken. I’ve walked around Trinity Road area, looking for such a place with those trees and houses but nothing leapt out. I believe from Phil the wedding took place in Hoylake so presume it was around Trinity Rd somewhere. There is a kids’ park nearby so perhaps it was there but I couldn’t match the houses up.

Further to my own contribution, Elizabeth Jones can’t be there as she died in 1908.
