Here’s another old image courtesy of Syd Bird. Pictured are a group of Hoylake fishermen down at the bottom of Trinity Road. I’d suggest that the building behind them is the former Fellowship House for the blind (the big purple coloured building that’s there today).
Syd suggests this photo must have been taken before the current promenade wall was constructed in 1897/8. Fellowship House has a plaque on it dated 1889 so it seems we can date this photo to within 10 years.
Good on the beard-less chap …it doesn’t always do to follow the current trends in personal grooming 🙂 Or perhaps he was one of forefathers of Movember?
If by chance you recognise an ancestor in the above photo, please feel free to leave a comment below.
Great photo. I’d love to put names to some of these faces – Anyone have any idea?
Keith
I belive the White Bearded Gent is an Armitage….I have other pics with him in…
A gent standing at the back, is a Bird…There is also possibly an Eccles…I am related to them all.
And proud i am too. :-))
Do you know of a Joshua Armitage? He was my grandfather’s (Alfred) brother,
My parents used to know Walter andJohn Begg (father and son) – I believe the Beggs were a fishing family? Anyone able to confirm?
I’m not sure – but could anyone confirmn that the fisherman sitting on the right hand side with a whiite beard is David Armitage born 1848. If it is he is my great grandfather and I have a similar photo – but its hard to be certain.
Hi Vanessa,
I reckon the photo was taken sometime around 1895 ,if that is the case the gentleman with the white beard would be just under 50 years of age if it was your great grandfather who you say was born in 1848. It`s a real shame that no details of the names of the folk in the photo were given on the original but that unfortunately often seems to be the case ,very frustrating!
If the gent with the white beard you refer to is David Armitage then he is the son of my G.G.G.G parents Joseph and Betsy Armitage.
my grandma was a Smith (Mildred Audrey) and has conncections into the Hoose Birds and Coopers (We have a Parr and an Armitage in there somewhere too!) We came on the web looking for pics of my Great Grandad Ernest Griffith Smith (He married Abigail Bird from memory) who was one of the first professional golfers but found nothing. We know the Birds used to look after the horses that drew the life boat (I think they were held at Bird’s Yard?) and it was my mum and I that started the orginal search for the lifeboat disaster that took a stack of our Bird relatives. We found a cluster of Christmas deaths at the FRO in London and asked someone on the Haslehurst circle if they knew what had happened. Nobody could find anything even the RNLI but after many years of searching the disaster was found and there is now a memorial that I need to go and see if I ever get back from London. My mum is now 85 and going strong and remembers the Birds, Coopers and Smiths well and with happy memories. She loved these photos so thanks to Sid for this.
Kind Regards
Gareth and Millie Owen
I mean syd sorry!
I’m an Armitage. My grandparents lived at Station road. Peggy (Margaret) and Bunny (Albert). Not sure who I’m related to in this area as I live in Norfolk.
I am attempting to complete my family tree. My forefathers were in the Dodd family, who were ‘fishers’ My Grandmother was Martha Amy Dodd b. 1885, who had a brother Arthur Tom Dodd b. 1888. My Grandmother lived at 1, Groveland Avenue and Arthur lived on Grove Road, halfway down on the seaward side of the road.
Their father was Thomas Dodd who I believe was born around 1857 who married
Mary Jane Sherlock b 1852..
Both Thomas and Arthur were Coxswains of the lifeboat during their lifetime. However, confusion arises as their are also three other Thomas Dodds born within 4 years of what I assume to be my Great Great Grandfather dob.
Can anyone resolve this date problem for me.
Can anyone throw light on a Harold Dodd who lived in Waverley Road and I believe was the Pro’ at Royal Liverpool G>C around the 1920’s / 30’s
Also, if I remember correctly did Syd Bird live in Walker St opposite Brosters.
I left Hoylake in 1966 and now live in St Andrews Fife, but do occasionally visit ‘home’ from time to time and would love to speak or meet up with anyone who remembers me
