This photo has me stumped!
The above photo, of an unnamed location in Hoylake, was kindly sent to me by Melbourne, Australia resident Radhika Beswick. Where do you reckon this photo was taken? I don’t think they’re the cemetery gates …but that was first guess Somewhere around Kings Gap perhaps with Valentia Road in the background?? What do you reckon?
Radhika found some other Hoylake photos in an album that belonged to her Great Grandmother. Radhika comments: “It turns out that my Great Grandmother and her sister lived in Hoylake from about 1899 – 1910 (at the most), with their aunt, Mrs Erwin. Â They lived at 12 Marine Parade in Hoylake. Â I found the very same house is still standing on “north Parade” on Google Earth. I have a photograph of the house at approx 1906 here [along with some others]”:

These look like the original gates of the Lighthouse in Valentia Rd. They are wooden now with a fence instead of railings, but I recognise the gate posts and the house in view is probably No 15 .
R Saville says
As an after thought, the original entrance is now bricked up but these gate posts are still there.

John, are these the only size you have, I would love to see full sized scans of these photographs as I think I may have a family connection to a couple of them. p.s. I have posted an image from google maps to the FB link, it shows the gate posts quite clearly.

Great photos! I like the fact that the prom was once called Marine Parade, so much nicer than North Parade!

Think like R Saville that this could be the old Lighthouse in Valentia Road. What lovely old photos.

Thanks for all the feedback on these photos!
As has been said, the gates were to the old, upper lighthouse in Valencia Road. I’ve walked past this week and can confirm that the gate posts are still there but the gates are gone. Take a look in google streetview and you’ll be able to see them.
Julian: Yes, they’re the only size images that I have.

Great spot by the way
The pictures stack up but the lighthouse did have a double entrance and about 20 yards further on is another entrance. I suspect there may some confusion about her address as the 1901 census shows Mary Erwin (38yrs) house head with Ada Erwin aged 16 and Emilie Erwin aged 13 living at 60 Prussia Road (Queeens Road)
