Domino’s, Hoylake is opening soon then!
Back in February we discussed the planning application from nationwide takeaway pizza chain Domino’s for a new outlet on Market Street. An “opening soon” banner was being fixed to the premises (number 2 Market Street) at lunchtime today.
Although the Wirral Council planning details are not currently indicating that planning consent has been granted, Wirral Council has confirmed to me that once all legal matters are signed-off, consent will be given.
Several HoylakeJunction readers have already shared their thoughts regarding Domino’s in Hoylake, but feel free to join in the conversation and share your thoughts too.
Personally I think it’s sad – although my teenagers are thrilled. We moved our business (The Potting Shed) to Hoylake for many reasons; but one was because the High Street was full of small businesses, some of them quirky and individual like our own. The introduction of big businesses like Subway and Dominos can spell the end for small businesses that can’t compete on price, never mind the marketing power of such chains. I like being part of a community of small businesses – and it is a community here in Hoylake. We received such a warm welcome when we arrived 2 years ago – both from residents and other businesses. I’ll never forget a lovely older resident who popped her head in the door about a month after we’d opened and said ‘I’m never going to paint in here, but I wish you well. Good luck’. How lovely. Are we going to lose that sense of community? Is it going to become like every other High Street, full of Costas and Dominos. I hope not. But I fear the worst.
When i was born in grove road hoylake all the shops were locally run ( such as bramalls the butchers and boardmans bikes ) and even when i left hoylake to join the forces in 1984 the sense of community was still there
however i dont think whats happening in hoylake is unique .. every small town in the uk is changing and its such a shame … i have so many fond memories of my childhood such as the cafe by hoylake station ( run by dolly ) … and inghams diy shop ….
even my local watering holes are going .. the “punch bowl” was a great pub with some great nights …. im not sure about the plasterers arms and the lakes
finally the proposed shop being used by donimo,s was the location of my first ever job … lawsons deep freeze …
if im in hoylake i will pop into your shop to say hello
good luck jeanette
I remember the deep freeze market in Albert road as I worked there in the early 1970s but there was not a cafe on Hoylake station but it was a kiosk ( sweets and tobacco ) also a taxi booking office
Hoylake. Fast Food City.
like most places then
Why people buy this stuff is beyond me!
does anyone remember “lawsons deep freeze” which used to be there …. i worked there straight from school in 1982 and had some fond memorys… there was also a deli which was part of the shop …!
Before Lawson’s Deep Freeze Market this was Josephine Taylor, a very long-established independent upmarket ladies’ outfitter. It occupied both units under the Central Hall fronting Market Street. People would queue for its annual January sale. Browns of Chester bought it out but it did not last long under the new management.
I think Manweb (or perhaps the Gas Board) occupied the neighbouring unit in Albert Road which is now a teashop.
Am sure a Cake Shop / Cafe ” Allisons” was on that same row near to Jospehine Taylor .
