Many thanks to Arthur Daws for sending me the three above photos of Market Street, dated from around 100 years ago.
The top one is the view from the junction at Chapel Road and on the right would’ve been the former chapel. I’m sure I’ve previously published a photo of the old chapel but I can’t seem to find it. That wrought iron gate (or its replacement I guess) is still there – I ran past it at lunchtime today.
The middle photo features the old Punchbowl pub (left). You can see another old photo of the pub here. And here too.
And the bottom photo is the view at the junction with Alderley Road. Those buildings haven’t changed too much over the last 112 years. A few years ago I published a photo of the same row of shops looking from the other direction.

Does anyone have a photo or information on a area called Meadows Yard. In 1909 my Grandparents lived there and in 1910 my Mother was born there. In about 1912/13 this area was designated a slum area and demolished, later Waverley Road was built on this site.

In the bottom photograph you can just make out the sign “Hindleys Market”, my grandmothers family ran this for many years. They sold fruit, poultry and game and much more, very much a family business as John and Ruth (nee Little) Hindley made sure all their children worked with them. My gt grandfather was George was in charge of the fruit.

Would the row of cottages in the top photo be known as “Chapel Cottages
I have an ancestor living in Chapel Cottages in the 1881 census. The other places mentioned immediately before and after the cottages are Market Street, Congregational Chapel, Smithy, Alfred Street and School Lane…
