How’s about this for a camper van!
This cool, blue DAF bus is currently parked-up on the grass next to the lifeboat station and it belongs to one of the land-yacht competitors. Looks like good fun to me! Load up your gear, bikes, plenty of food and drink on board and away you go. I suppose the dog’d have to come. It even looks like that flue on the roof might be from a wood burner… now that’d be ace! Maybe it’s not – anyone know?
It appeals though, the lifestyle. Drive somewhere out of the way, a quiet coast maybe; get settled in; wake up for a mug of tea; do a decent run; back for toast and coffee and then go for a walk or stay onboard and read a book. Not a care in the world. There’s a movement called vanlife and this long NewYorker article that I stumbled upon a few months ago describes it in some detail.
But maybe the reality is different? All chemical loos, damp towels (damp dogs too), condensation and instant noodles. Something to try one day perhaps.
Land yacht racing
Any how, if you didn’t know, there’s currently a European Land Yacht championships taking place on the beach. You should go down to the prom and take a look. Get there first thing or at the end of day and all the yachts are parked up against the prom wall:
There’s some great opportunities for foreign language listening and photo taking!
Earlier in the week there wasn’t a breath of wind (unusual, I know) and all the competitors were just sat around chatting. But, being Hoylake, the breeze returned and the land yachts have been out racing.
Worth a look if you’re passing – it’s free to watch.
Jackie Hall says
Such a shame it was not advertised more as a great Tourist Attraction to Hoylake.
When I asked why it had not been advertised I was told it was not a Spectator Sport
Those who found out and came were delighted.
Wirral Tourist Group should be made aware next time!!!
