Following on the post about the Big Lunch and local street parties, here are a couple of photographs recording popular celebrations in our history. Above you can see a street party in Saxon Road to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee in 1977.
And below is a photo of a street party in nearby Chapel Road which is presumed to be a worthy celebration for VE Day in 1945. Look closely and you’ll notice the children are making the two-fingered peace sign. What’s that thing in the background with the letter H on it, anyone know?
From my recollection the building with the letter H on it was an air raid shelter which was located at the top end of Chapel Road. When we were kids we used to play around it , I think it was removed sometime in the late 1940`s
I think Syd is spot on and maybe maybe the H signified “Home Guard post”.
I’ve no idea what the thing with the ‘H’ on it was, but what I can
tell you is that you see the 3 women who are standing to the far
right of the picture, I am almost certain that the one to the far
right in the summery dress is my auntie Mabel Dale (nee Beckett) who
is still alive and living in Meols (she has not got back to me yet to
confirm it is her); I am presuming the lady in the middle is their
mother and the lady to her immediate left in the long dark coat is my
mother Betty Baldock (nee Beckett) who died a few years ago and lived
all her life in Hoylake and Meols. Their main family home was the
house on Birkenhead Road at the junction with Chapel Road which is near to
where they are standing and for many years afterwards it became the
chiropodists (foot hospital). Small world! Thanks John.
