Well done to Hoylake Station for being nominated as a finalist in the Small Station category at the National Rail Awards last Thursday, 16th September.
The winning station was Bexhill (Southern Railway) whilst another Merseyrail station Ormskirk was highly commended along with Barrow-in-Furness (First TransPennine Express)
Other stations in the finalists group along with Hoylake were Aylesbury Vale Parkway (Chiltern Railways), Corby (East Midlands Trains) and Imperial Wharf (Transport for London – London Rail).
So well done to everyone who works at Hoylake’s main train station (the other being Manor Road of course)!
I took that photo back in November 2008.

I remember in the 50s Manor Road won at least one prize for best cared for station (not sure out of how many or what area). The staff had planted flower beds and possibly hung up some baskets, and there was a 10 foot square of land just outside the door which was also planted. The outside flower bed was later taken over by a tobacco kiosk. And I do remember they had a “candle stick” telephone which would be worth a few bob today.
