Many thanks to all of you who knew what Jessies Yard used to be – see I told you you’d know! Thanks for getting in touch either by email or by leaving a comment – it’s great to hear from you. Great to hear from Syd Bird  the great grandchild of Jesse Bird, who left a comment . I’ll check the drainpipe mentioned – just in case those initials are still there.
Interesting to hear that the horses used by Jesse Bird were also used to pull the lifeboat out to sea. Thanks to Sue Vine for alerting me to this Old Wirral article – take a look at their Hoylake section too, they have some great old photos along with a few articles of local and a wider Wirral history.
By the way, if you leave a comment here on HoylakeJunction.com and want to know if other readers have commented too, then tick the box underneath the comment box that says “Notify me of followup comments via e-mail” – that way you won’t miss anything !
Some great pics in that OldWirral.com site! I’d love to go back in time and walk around Hoylake before it was so built up….! My grandmother , Minnie Hayward, used to reminisce on her childhood Hoylake holidays having travelled all the way from Birkenhead!! Born in 1897, she lived in West Kirby drom the 1930s then Hoylake from the 1960s and frequently would raise her walking stick and tell everyone she remembered it when it was all just sandhills and fields.
My Gran was also born that year, 1897, funny if they knew each other, i will ask my Mum if she recognises your Grandmothers name.
re Jesse Bird- do we know for sure that Jessies Yard does refer to Jesse Bird. Jessie being female name and of course Jesse a mans. Maybe the builders/developers whatever of the apartments had heard the name but not seen it written??
Obviously I wasn’t teh only one who made the Jesse connection but are we correct. Fun if anyone who lives in Hoylake still could check it out.
jessie bird was my grandad
Hi Keith
How proud you must be to have Jesse as your grandad. I recall his removal company moving us from Wallasey to Bidston in 1964 and from Bidston to Meols in 1966. I lived in Hoylake for many years and my husband grew up in Newton rd, went to Market St. school etc. His Dad grew up in Lee Rd.
Do you still live in Hoylake? i know many on this site are like me and have moved away.
I’ve moved house many times in my life, but never with the expertise that Jess Bird co. brought to the job.
Sue
hello Sue
I worked for Jesse Bird and Sons around that time. It was ran by 2 brothers, Frank and ?
Happy times
Peter
hi Peter. I don’t remember the names. But maybe you “moved” us?? By the way your reply is 2 years after I posted! But glad you’ve caught up with the thread. Jesse Bird was a Hoylake “institution” back in the day. Sue
Are you then related to Gary Bird ? What’s happened to him ?
Peter Robinson replies:
Hi Sue
Peter Robinson replies:
Thanks for reply.
My sister ( June Millington ) owned the newsagents ( Absolems ) opposite the train station in West Kirby along with her husband Ron in the mid late 50’s. I moved from New Brighton to Banks Rd West Kirby in about 1966. Then came to Canada, where I am now. Ottawa.
Cheers
hi, my mother was a Broster born in the farm House next door to Jesse Bird, were Syd Bird lived I believe. two of my Grandfathers Horses used to with Jesse Birds Horses, pull the Tractor down to the beach. Helen Carr.
In Hoylake Library (does it still exist?) they used to have the minutes of the old Hoylake and West Kirby Urban District Council, dating back ot the beginning of the twentieth century. Before the First World War, there were many entries for Jesse Bird being paid for haulage for road construction and repair: so as well as all the other work mentioned here, he was also responsbile for building Market Street………..
I think Gary Bird has moved and now is on the crew of Blackpool Lifeboat.
I wonder if that’s a younger Gary Bird. I suspect the Gary Bird that Charles Morris is asking about might now be beyond the age fro active lifeboat service.
There was a Gary Bird around when I was a teenager and I’m now 70. It would be interesting to know maybe he’s a grandson in Blackpool?
