A man died this morning after being hit by a train at the Carlton Lane level crossing.
The crossing (pictured above) is not for public use but is used by agricultural/market gardens workers. It appears that an un-named man was struck by an out of service train that was heading to West Kirby at around 6.20 am this morning the Echo reports.
If you are not familiar with Carlton Lane, access is from Birkenhead Road with the entrance to the lane adjacent to the Carlton Terrace properties. There are a few residential properties and a number of buildings used by Kingsmead School. About two thirds of the way down Carlton Lane is a footpath that leads to Sandringham Avenue.
Walk a little further and you’ll see a sign indicating the lane is for private use only.
This latest incident highlights just how dangerous crossing the railway line can be. There have been several fatalities on this stretch of the Wirral Line in the last few years.
Sarah Briscoe says
Yet again it was an empty train and they don’t half go quickly as they just whizz through stations. They should slow down for the set of 3 or 4 crossings either side of Manor Road station. Tooting their horn isn’t enough.
