The controversial plans to develop homes on the site of the tennis courts in Charles Road have been approved by Wirral Council.
While the status of the planning application hasn’t yet been updated, the Wirral Globe is reporting that the plans received the go-ahead at the planning committee meeting last night.
The original plans were submitted in 2013 (details) but were subsequently withdrawn and a revised application was submitted last August (details).
It is reported that the Managing Trustees of St Lukes Methodist Church are to donate £40,000 for improvements to the existing tennis courts in Meols Parade Gardens.
Comments welcome.
Its really not good enough upgrading existing tennis courts – new courts should be established.
Our armchair bound councillors are always lecturing us on exercise and participation, obesity in children (and adults) and you take away recreational facilities?
You could learn a lesson by looking at facilities in other countries (eg. Australia) where progressive councils would never let this happen. They would take over the facility as a community project.
These courts have been used for at least 65 years. We used to cycle from WK to play in the 50s with the WK Methodist church youth group. Another church tragedy for Hoylake. Shame! What’s happening?
I notice that the tennis court is in regular use, are all the members & congregation at St. Luke’s in agreement with this
sale. I was told by an ‘old Hoylakian’ that he thought the land was entailed, does anyone know anything about this.
My old school in Birkenhead was sold for development, then the family of the original benefactor stepped forward & claimed the money.
