I’m playing catch-up on a couple of items that I’ve received recently and first up is one that sounds most intriguing!
Ian Davies kindly sent me some press cuttings that were donated to Hoylake RNLI recently. As the heading shows from the old Hoylake & West Kirby Advertiser newspaper, some skeletal remains were disturbed, piled together with a skull placed on top. Rather gruesome!
I gather there is a burial slab on Hilbre Island that dates back to 1050AD, found in 1864.
Click here to open the large pdf document that contains the full press clipping (quality isn’t fantastic for the first one). You’ll also see a couple of articles about Hoylake RNLI and an article about Joseph Jones – a 93 year old Hoylake fisherman (article published in 1949 we reckon).
Martyn says
What a lovely phrase by the reporter in the final press cutting. “This grand old man who knows how to catch the sunlight that is shed on life’s eventide”, I wonder if any of his Great-great-great-great-grandchildern are still in the area?
